Air pollution in urban centers of Mongolia, including the capital city of Ulaanbaatar, has reached "state of emergency" levels. 80% of the air pollution in Ulaanbaatar is being caused by raw coal burning by households in ger districts and by micro power stations, 10% attributed to automobile emissions, 6% being produced by power plants and 4% from other sources.
Individuals and organizations are trying to reduce air pollution and increase awareness in different ways. For example:

Arig Bank is announcing the "Let's fight Air Pollution together!" challenge, as part of its efforts for making real contributions in building a sustainable future for Mongolia.
The objective of the challenge is to reduce CO2 emissions coming from ger districts by discovering the best heating, energy generation and supply solution(s) and testing, applying them in practice.
In the framework of the challenge, “The Best Solution(s)” are technologies that generate heating and energy for ger area households, with the least negative footprint on the environment and households' safety and income.
The project will run for 4 years in the following 3 phases.

Summary of the Challenge activity plan
Phase 1 Concept, April 1, 2017 – September 15, 2017
The first phase of the challenge is Concept Note submission. Solution(s) will be reviewed by the Advisory Board and shortlisted participants will be asked to provide their full proposal. The best solution(s) will be awarded 100 million tugrugs.
Submitted solution(s) will be reviewed by the Advisory Board and shortlisted participants will be asked to provide their full proposal and provided a template.
Phase 2 Pilot, September, 2017 – June, 2018The winning solution(s) will be tested in real-life scenarios in functionality, performance, safety, financial feasibility and post-sale support and developed further, if necessary. Financing will be provided for the pilot and development phase. The financing model will also be developed and tested during this phase.
Phase 3 Scale up, June, 2018 – September 2021Solution(s) proven in functionality, performance, safety and financial feasibility will be launched into the market.
The main objective of this project is to reduce and/or eliminate air pollution, encourage and fuel innovation and creativity.

Let’s fight air pollution forum
With the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI)’s sponsorship, Arig Bank successfully organized “Let’s fight air pollution together” forum at Blue Sky Hotel’s Diamond Hall to raise awareness about the innovation challenge between target segments as well as exchange information through panel discussions by bringing together all relevant entities On June 30, 2017.
270 of them attended, also twelve companies that operate energy and heating sector participated in the exhibition of creative & technical solutions.
Total of 270 stakeholders attended the forum and about 40% of were from private sector, 6% were from government organizations, 20 professionals from international organizations and NGOs each and 12 clean heating and insulation technology solution companies introduced their products and services in the exhibition of the forum. The forum took place with extensive range of discussions amongst delegates from engineering schools, science and research entities, and media companies.

“Let’s Fight Air pollution” social media innovative idea competition
“Let’s fight air pollution together” social media idea competition under Innovation challenge to promote and increase awareness within target audience was held successfully from 4th to 20th September at Arig Bank Facebook page.
Total of 930 ideas been delivered via Facebook for social competition of “Let’s fight air pollution together”. Out of total idea delivered shortlisted 80 ideas evaluated under initial criteria of practicality and potential of implementation within short or medium term to be presented to Partnership committee members to select finalist in below table.

Preparation of real-time testing of 22 technical solutions out of 47 technical solution application submitted for “Let’s fight air pollution together” innovation challenge is currently in progress to pilot throughout December 2017 till February 2018 with possible extension of a month if necessary. Organizing parties and Partnership committee members are preparing ground work of piloting venue to put up identical 22 Gers in same weather and climate condition to install technical solutions for carefully observing and measuring practicality and both cost and energy efficiency.
After completion of piloting phase, detailed information will be disclosed to public and distributed among other stakeholders.
